Eclipse Phase (Thursdays)

Hey y'all! I'm excited about running this system and I hope we that together we can bring this new world to life.  As I said before i've never run or played this system and I don't have very much experience with the percentile system but I am familiar with Catalyst Game Lab's other products and I like to think i'm a pretty competent GM.  Anyway, I suggest you thumb through the book and try to figure out character creation yourself but if you need help I can meet with you; just e-mail or txt me and we'll hook up.  The link to the book and the character sheet is below.  Now that this thread exists i'm going to stop e-mailing you so please check here frequently.  Godspeed and happy gaming!

It's gonna be awesome! I can't wait. Imma work on my character for it this weekend and I'm hoping that I'll be able to figure it out. Are we starting this upcoming Thursday?

Great to have you, Johnathan.

Here are a few blurbs I yanked from the book that define some of the driving themes behind Eclipse Phase:

General overview:
Eclipse Phase is a post-apocalyptic roleplaying game of transhuman conspiracy and horror. Humans are enhanced and improved, but humanity is battered and bitterly divided. Technology allows the re-shaping of bodies and minds and liberates us from material needs, but also creates opportunities for oppression and puts the capability for mass destruction in the hands of everyone. Many threats lurk in the devastated habitats of the Fall, dangers both familiar and alien.

What is transhumanism?
Transhumanism is a term used synonymously to mean “human enhancement.” It is an international cultural and intellectual movement that endorses the use of science and technology to enhance the human condition, both mentally and physically. In support of this, transhumanism also embraces using emerging technologies to eliminate the undesirable elements of the human condition such as aging, disabilities, diseases, and involuntary death. Many transhumanists believe these technologies will be arriving in our near future at an exponentially accelerated pace and work to promote universal access to and democratic control of such technologies. In the long scheme of things, transhumanism can also be considered the transitional period between the current human condition and an entity so far advanced in capabilities (both physical and mental faculties) as to merit the label “posthuman.”

As a theme, transhumanism embraces heady questions. What defines human? What does it mean to defeat death? If minds are software, where do you draw the line with programming them? If machines and animals can also be raised to sentience, what are our responsibilities to them? If you can copy yourself, where does “you” end and someone new begin? What are the potentials of these technologies in terms of both oppressive control and liberation? How will these technologies change our society, our cultures, and our lives?

I'm sorry if you were hoping for something in my own words, but it seems to me that these concepts are too pivotal to the game to be left up to me.  The authors say it much better than I ever could so there :-P

Now for the setting:
Think of our world as it is now.  Now unthink everything beautiful that just flashed through your mind and leave all of the destruction and shortcomings that we as a race have.   Oh, and unthink our planet.  Just the word "Earth" brings tears to many people's eyes.  Humanity was brought to its knees by the TITANs (look it up) and we had to flee Earth.  That series of events leading up to our emigration is called the Fall and our calendar started over after that.  Years are recorded in AF (after the Fall) instead of AD.  You are a Sentinel for FIREWALL.  Sentinels are basically the footsoldiers of the organization whose job it is to put an end to "existential threats", or anything that threatens the existence of our race.  We're not talking about Joe-schmoe Power Rangers: Space Police Department.  NO.  When you get a mission your success or failure will determine the lives of millions of people.  Is a terrorist planning to blow a hole in a space colony that's too big for the self-sealing exoskeleton to handle?  Everyone could be sucked in to oblivion if you let that happen. Dangerous research is also part of your job.  There is one elevator left that goes down to Earth and you may be sent down to search for relics.  They are very valuable and you can strike it rich if you make it back, but you won't make it back.  You may be sent through a Pandora's Gate, a wormhole that the TITANs used to travel between worlds.

Morphs:
Everyone has a cortical stack implanted at the base of their spinal cord.  Think of it as a hard drive that you use to save a backup of your brain on.  When you die, provided your stack is still intact, doctors can remove this backup and put it in a different body.  Voila! You are back to normal.  You may be in a body that is completely different than your last one; these are called morphs.

Your body is disposable. If it gets old, sick, or too heavily damaged, you can digitize your  consciousness and download it into a new one. The process isn’t cheap or easy, but it does guarantee you effective immortality—as long as you remember to back yourself up and don’t go insane. The term morph is used to describe any type of form your mind inhabits, whether a vat-grown clone sleeve, a synthetic robotic shell, a part-bio/part-synthetic “pod,” or even the purely electronic software state of an infomorph.
A character’s morph may die, but the character’s ego may live on, assuming appropriate backup measures have been taken. Morphs are expendable, but your character’s ego represents the ongoing,
continuous life path of your character’s mind and personality. This continuity may be interrupted by an unexpected death (depending on how recently the backup was made), but it represents the totality of the character’s mental state and experiences. Some aspects of your character—particularly skills, along with some stats and traits—belong to your character’s ego and so stay with them throughout
the character’s development. Some stats and traits, however, are determined by morph, as noted, and so will change if your character leaves one body and takes on another. Morphs may also affect other skills and stats, as detailed in the morph description.

(the last two paragraphs about morphs are from the book, everything else is me.)
If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

New morphs!

I really appreciate everyone coming out on Thursday to make characters and learn more about the setting.  For those of you who didn't make it that's fine because I know that e-mail should have had more forward notice and for that I apologize.  If you haven't made a character you have plenty of time between now and next Thursday; just post here or e-mail me and we'll hook up.

For those of you who do have characters: feel free to post your backstory and I may find some incentive to give you depending on the quality.  At the very least post the gist of your character for the sake of party balance.

I found some morphs that aren't core here.  Check them out if you are looking for more options.  I won't allow the aquatic ones but you probably don't want them anyway.  The psi'ker is an option but not at character creation.  That's one you'll have to acquire in-game if you want it.   As far as the uplifts: I will allow Ursus and arachnoid.  All of the humanoid ones are fair game.

OHH HEELLL YEAHH!!

Thanks to Buttercup I have the campaign setting now. I've only read about 4 pages of it but lemme tell ya, this is going to be OFF. THE. CHAIN.  I can't wait.  There are some morphs that aren't core in the campaign book but i'm not going to post the book.  A little later, once a few people need to resleeve, i'll make them available as other options.  You'll be starting on Luna, but your home can be whatever you want it to be.  We'll just say Firewall sent you there for debriefing.

Often he will go shirtless revealing a tanned skin of a Jap-American and loose baggy pants showing a toned lower torso with slight scarring from implants and alterations to his body  when not using his armored suit. English is interchangeable with his Japanese and often will us them both in combat situations and when discussing things with his Muse. Most often when not in the full suit he can be found playing games with his muse or relaxing with someone listening to stories about colonies wanting to hear about the worries of the people spending time with Moshi watching videos and reading about the newest commonwealth gun technology. He values the lives of those who want to change their destiny, but ultimately wanting the survival of the masses one life given to save thousands is his duty. When he is in the armor he is complete business often taking into the full capacity of the lives that he takes with each shot. His arm and the weapon it holds are the ultimate judge of these people and he will not stop in his quest to rid this world of those who seek to destroy it, emotions are for the week and those who have no sense of duty the weak weep for death he revels in the idea of life and preservation. Firewall are the givers of society, the commonwealth know what’s best for him, and his code are what drive him to do what needs to be done.

Skill set: He is a combat specialist giving almost all of his time to learning the art of gunfu and everything a firewall soldier should need. Kinetic weapons, fray, free running, perception, and Pilot are his best skills, and academically he specializes in earth knowledge, Gun technology, and Martial arts training.

Muse: Moshi His muse Moshi has been with him since the fall of earth and the re-colonization of the galaxy she knows how and when to make use of herself often hacking into a terminal and taking control so that Matsu can continue with his combat routine they work as partners he needs her for the use of technology and hacking she needs a body to occupy and to be protected he will never let her die protect her and she will protect him. In combat she will paint targets in the smart link system and create a better picture for him to view and make combat HUD easier to understand. On her days when Matsu is in commonwealth clothing they enjoy watching and conversing about the newest gun-fu and sci-fi martial arts films and the newest gun and armored technology. They act more like log time lovers than actual Person and computer.

Quotes: "I am your executioner, I am your judge, I am the decider of destiny, and today I revoke your right to destiny’s end."

"Moshi guide my hand, find me the target and let my arm protect those that have fallen find me the end that is needed."

"This body is weak, this is strong, only through my convictions can they work in harmony."

Recent events: Firewall has once again called on Matsu to serve and clean this world of the infection that is the people who do not value the lives of the people they hurt. Each mission brings him closer to returning to earth and finishing the Job that needs to be done.

Re: Character introduction: Matsu

Mister Fox
I'm excited about Thursdays game I wrote a detailed backstory and I'm learning the system combat is a nice idea and I like how simple it is and from what I'm reading Eclipse Phase is very combat intensive system lots of hot drops into planets then you go to checkpoint fight bad guy return to ship fall back down to planet try to find a pandora gate home then die and re-sleeve.

So Mr.Henry I have laid out the ground work for a epic character I just hope that In your world he can survive and thrive to be something greater than the part I have made of him the only missing peice is you.

Re: Character introduction: Matsu

Mister Fox
So I got to read more into the eclipse phase mythos. It kinda makes things seem really gritty you can't do shit bruh things.

Moshi has 1 major flaw if I die so does she. Sucks

Same thing with Matsu if moshi dies then Matsu can no longer control alot of stuff and meat space will kill him.

Also how does hot dropping work onto planets?

And when does freerunning/fray come into play?

Hot dropping usually just happens. If you're trying to jump into a really specific spot and where you land matters then i'll have you roll a freefall check but it typically doesn't matter.

free running: pretend it's acrobatics in any other system.

fray:  pretend it's dodge in Shadowrun.
